Another week goes by at Jackie Stephen Racing. The weather is still not in our favour, leaving everyone very fed up and wishing spring and summer would come faster. The weather is continuing to throw us a little this week. With some bitterly cold days and nights, and some days of continuous rain the tracks are still very icy making it difficult to get the horses around the farm. The temperature went as low as -6 at the end of the week. Nevertheless, we are managing away, wrapping up warm and changing up some of the everyday routine for the horses and humans to keep everyone on their toes!…
As the weather continues to be cold everything is still frozen. We had some more snow and wet patches which has then frozen making all the tracks very slippy and dangerous. Nevertheless we managed to make it to the all weather gallop and continued with some flat work in the school as the path to the flat gallops is too icy. With the snow all gone and the weather getting, milder conditions are getting better in Aberdeenshire. Spirits are running high on the yard as Christmas fast approaches. This week we had Midnight Kate run in the Junior Bumper at Newcastle. She put in a pleasing effort for her first race. Today at Newcastle we have Midnight Kate in the Junior Bumper. This is a bit of a fact finding exercise as she is unraced and this should give us an idea of what she is like. As it was her first time travelling down and being on a racecourse we have taken retired Problema-Tic, better know as Mattie, down to keep her company for the trip.
With Musselburgh being abandoned, due to frost, last Monday we had entered Bright Prospect for the rescheduled meeting this Monday. The meeting went ahead today but we felt with the frost coming out the ground it would be a bit dead and not his bag. Nevertheless, our colours still ran in CORNWALL. For the past 2 weeks its been a challenge to exercise the horses with rain, frost and snow. Every night the yard has been freezing making it difficult to even take the horse out of the stables to the walker let alone to exercise them. On a very snowy Thursday morning we set off with Lovely Schtuff and Welcome Ben for Musselburgh on Thursday and Doncaster on Friday. This was Lovely Schtuff’s first run for us in the bumper at Musselburgh. He was quite green but he got the hang of it and managed to finish strongly and was a pleasing 5th. On Saturday the 11th we ran Micks Wish, Amilliontimes and Welcome Ben at Kelso. Micks Wish ran in his first hurdle and found the pace quite hot. He jumped nicely and he will hopefully build in confidence from this run. Amilliontimes performed as he always does, jumping well and trying his hardest.
