Tough times

Horse racing can be a complete mix of emotions, with ups and downs everyday. This week we are very sad to report the loss of stable star Welcome Ben at Kelso. It is so incredibly tough losing a horse at anytime but Welcome Ben was a true star, loved by everyone here especially Jackie. He gave us a number of great wins over his career including an incredible win after a year off at Ayr back in May. He will…

Hellos and Goodbyes

In terms of racing we have been quiet over the last few weeks, however we have nearly all the horses back in some kind of work which means we have still been busy! We welcomed new horse Drogon to the yard a couple weeks ago, he has previously run on the flat and will continue to do this meaning he is our first official flat horse! He’s a lovely character and is fitting into life in Aberdeenshire very well. This…

Nobody likes rain in summer

Its been quiet at Conglass over the last week, with no much racing happening some of the horses are having an easier spell. We ran a few horses over the two day meeting at Perth 30th and 31st July. We had Palixandre and Highland Peak on the Tuesday evening meeting. Palixandre is a very strong and hot headed horse and so ended up leading for majority of his race but then found nothing in the finish and ended up finishing…

End of July

This past week we have been relatively quiet in the sense of racing but busy at home. We had our staff BBQ on Thursday night which was a great with good food and lovely to see everyone outside of the yard. We also managed to pick the right week with the heatwave and temperatures hitting highs of 27 degrees! We’ve had great success with breaking the youngsters we bought back in May and the girls have been working hard to…

Back to Perth

Last week we had 3 horses down at Perth – Bermondsey Belle, Welcome Ben and Highland Peak. Bermondsey Belle ran rather disappointingly, not showing much engagement with the race and pulled up. Welcome Ben ran in his usual fashion, setting the pace out front and jumping well however he didn’t have much left after the second last and ended up finishing 4th. Highland Peak was unfortunate as at the first he jumped well but was very close to others and…

Perth and Day at the Races at Castle Fraser

This week we had Welcome Ben at Perth on Saturday. He ran in his usual style upfront and jumping well but found one better than him on the day and finished in 2nd. Another good run from him and we will look to run him again soon. We have been busy helping support Day at the Races at Castle Fraser which is happening on 29th June. Jackie, Rachael, Welcome Ben and Highland Peak went there later last week to have…

Sales, Kelso and Hexham

We’ve been busy over the last couple of weeks. We now have 4 new horses! Paddy and Luke, both 3 year olds who need to be broken and produced. Palixandre and Scullys Forge who are both 5, Palixandre has already raced over hurdles and Scullys Forge has been point-to-pointing in Ireland. All 4 of them have settled in well and we have thrown ourselves into breaking Paddy and Luke whilst Scullys Forge is enjoying a few weeks off and Palixandre…

All about the number 3

This week has been the week for the number 3. We had 3 runners – Bermondsey Belle and Highland Peak at Perth on Thursday and Ladyvie at Haydon Point-to-point on Saturday. Bermondsey Belle ran in a 2 mile maiden, which are always competitive, and it was only her second run over hurdles. She jumped fantastically but will need further than 2 miles and we are just trying to get a handicap for her to allow her to run against horses…

Welcome Ben wins again

This week we had Welcome Ben at Ayr for his second race back after his long break last year due to injury. He was fantastic, with another horse wanting to make the race he didn’t get to run out front himself in his usual style. However, this was to his advantage as it allowed him to settle in behind the leader and jump clear of the other horses about 3 from the finish. He then went on to stay clear…

New arrival

This week we welcomed a new arrival to Conglass – Betty. She is a 4 year old, dark bay filly who has settled in very well and has a very sweet character. She will currently be owned by Patrick but it is likely shares or other forms of ownership will be available for her once she has got going. She is broken and will be aiming to do a bumper soon. There is also sales at the end of the…
